iPads in Education: iPads are a wonderful tool in the classroom. They can perform a number of assistive technology functions and can benefit learning for all types of students. Ipads can help teachers create better resources for students. I have listed some my favorite apps for the classroom.

First Then Visual Scheduler by Good Karma Apps
This is a flexible app that is excellent for creating picture schedules to support students on the autism spectrum. The app comes with a large number of stock images. Images can also be taken from the internet or from the ipad's camera. The app also allows for audio prompts and video models to be inserted into the steps of the schedule. The app offers the capability to export the schedule to a pdf file for printing. Students my view the schedule steps on the ipad in a variety of different ways, either one step at a time or as a complete checklist of steps. Import/export featurs allow teachers to send schedules home. Available on itunes. Cost $9.99 Clicker Docs (Crick Software) The Clicker docs app is an assisted word processor that can be helpful to students with a number of disabilities. Clicker Docs offers word prediction technology to support students who struggle with spelling. The app offers text to speech for students who have difficutlty with reading. Word banks can be customized for the student with specific vocabulary relevant to the assignment or the student. Available on itunes $24.99 Pictello (AssistiveWare) Pictello is an app that allows students to write short stories and illustrate them with pictures taken with the ipad camera. Pictello also allows the students to voice the story with text to speech or with their own recorded voice. Pictello is great for providing visual supports for struggling writers. It is also useful in creating multimedia social stories. Students really enjoy recording the audio of their own stories. Available on itunes $18.99 Conversation Builder (Mobile Education Store) Conversation Builder is a tool which prompts students through each stage of of an interactive conversation and records their spoken responses. Conversation builder can then play back the entire conversation. The length, format, and subject of conversations may be customized. Students may have a conversation with an automated partner, or they can work on a group conversation by passing the ipad to peers. This app is great for teaching social skills and promoting language skills. Available on itunes for $19.99 Little Writer PRO (Alligator Apps) Little Writer Pro is an excellent resource for students who struggle with handwriting. This app demonstrates the proper formation of upper and lower case letters and provides the opportunity for the student to trace letters If the student's tracing is not correct, the app prompts the student to try again. When the student traces correctly the app offers verbal reinforcement. The order of the letters learned may be customized. This app is motivational and engaging for students. Available on itunes for $1.99 Proloquo2Go (Assistiveware) Proloquo2Go is a augmentative and alternative communicaiton app. This app provides an easy to use voice for people who are non-verbal. Students can scroll through various sections to express wants and needs and to initiate and repond to conversation. Proloquo2go is one of the most expensive apps available at $189 for a single license, but it has been very effective for many people. This Youtube video demonstrates the difference this app made for one child's ability to communicate. |
